Paper flowers are perfect for adding color to any room. Also, they don’t fade over time like real flowers – making them the ideal decoration for birthdays, baby showers, weddings, and more!
This post will show how to make beautiful Cricut rolled paper flowers. You don’t need anything fancy – a few basic crafting supplies like Cardstock and glue will do the best job!
They are quick to build and easy to customize. Once you go, you can make many rolled paper flowers in about an hour! I will show you how to make it in different colors and sizes.
What Supplies Do You Need for This Project Work?
Here are the materials and tools to make rolled paper flowers with the Cricut machine.
Cardstock: I like to use 65lb cardstock with a solid core. It is strong but still bendable. Also, you can use Cricut 12×12 Cardstock and other types of patterned paper.
Cricut electronic cutting machine: For this project work, either Cricut Maker 3 or Cricut Explore 3 will work the best.
LightGrip Cutting Mat.
Quilling Tool: Cricut machine also makes a quilling tool that can be found in their paper flower toolset.
Quick-drying craft glue and hot glue.
Best Cardstock for Your Paper Flowers
The first thing is which type of paper to use? It’s just about any cardstock, as long as it is double-sided and has a solid core. Otherwise, the cut edge will turn white!
My favorite type of paper to use for paper flowers is 65-pound Cardstock. It is strong enough that it won’t rip, but it is still flexible enough to make beautiful paper flower petals. You can find the best suitable Cardstock in 8.5″ by 11″ sized sheets or 12″ by 12 sized sheets.
Quilling Tools and Options
If you are new to paper flower crafting, you may be thinking: what is a quilling tool? Quilling tools are small hand tools used to make paper flower coils easily and rapidly.
Quilling tools are used to have a metal tip with a small slot. To use this tool, insert the end of a paper strip into the slot, and turn the tool to roll the paper. The slot will hold the paper exactly as you move the tool.
If you don’t have a quilling tool, you can substitute a thin needle tool or toothpick. I have also made my quilling tool by using a craft knife to cut out a small slot at the end of a wooden skewer.
Best Glue for Your Paper Flowers
Once you have assembled your paper flowers, use your glue to secure them. For the best glue for paper flowers tutorial, you have only two choices:
Quick-drying craft glue: I use tacky glue for paper flower crafting projects.
The hot glue gun is another great option because it sets so rapidly.
Best Cricut Machines for Paper Flower Crafting
You can use any of 3 types of Cricut machines to cut your paper flowers – the Cricut Explore 3, Cricut Maker 3, or Cricut Joy.
The Cricut Explore and Maker machines can cut paper flowers larger than the Cricut Joy. The Cricut Explore and Maker machine can cut up to 12″ in width, while the Joy can cut up to 5.5″ in width.
So, if you want to make the biggest paper flowers, you will need to use Cricut Explore or Cricut Maker.
Here Are the Instructions to Make Paper Flowers with The Cricut Machine
We have talked about all the materials and tools needed to make paper flowers. Let’s move on to the project instructions. Here are 3 easy steps to make Rolled Paper Flowers with the Cricut machine.
Step 1. Set the Cut File to the Cricut Design Space
How You Can Find Flowers in the Cricut Design Space
The 3D paper flowers are available at the Cricut Design Space.
Note: You can download it if you don’t have Cricut Design Space. You can use it on Android devices, Windows, Mac, and iOS.
There are many picture sets with rolled paper flowers. You can find other great SVG cut files in the Cricut Design Space. Here are some to see:
The “Flower Shoppe” picture set is available with a Cricut Access subscription. This picture set has 50 pictures with flower styles, including paper roses.
“Elegant 3D Paper Flowers” has 10 pictures with many rolled paper flowers.
“Close To My Heart – Art Philosophy” is a vast picture set with 450 pictures, including many rolled paper flowers.
Note: If you have a legacy Cricut machine model, you will still be able to find these paper flower templates at Flower Shoppe Cartridge.
Step 2. Cut out the Flower Shapes with the Cricut Machine
The next step is to cut the shapes with your Cricut machine.
Place the Cardstock on your LightGrip cutting mat, and load the mat into the Cricut machine.
Back in the Cricut Design Space, press the “Make It” button to send the cut file to the Cricut machine.
On the next screen, choose Cardstock as your base material. Double-check that the fine-point cutting blade is loaded into the Cricut machine.
Back on the machine, click the flashing button to begin the cut. When the cut is completed, take the mat off. Carefully remove the cut Cardstock from your mat.
But if you find your paper tugging or curling too much, turn the mat upside down on a clean surface. Carefully peel the mat off the shredded paper.
Step 3. Collect the Paper Flowers
We will use the quilling tool to roll out paper flowers from the cut-out template.
Insert paper flower end cut-out into the slotted tip of the quilling tool. (Always start with outer petals at the outer edge of the spiral shape, not the circle base in the center.)
Hold the cut-out paper flower in your left hand. Then, use your right hand to turn the quilling tool (counterclockwise).
Keep a slight tension on the paper while rolling the flower. Keep the bottom edge of the rolled paper flower lined up. (When you get to the flower’s end, it will become harder to roll. Roll slowly, and keep the bottom edge facing up.)
When you find the base of the circle in the middle of the spiral, stop rolling it. Gently press your paper flower between your thumb and fingers, and slide the quilling tool from the center of the paper flower.
Give the paper flower a rest. Add a dab of glue to the circle section at the end of the cut-out. Fold the center part over the bottom of the paper flower. Hold the flower together for some moments to allow the glue to set.
