Apple: MagSafe or Lightning connector?

Apple has been using a lightning connector for charging, and data transfer for quite a while now. Apple is all about innovation and innovation they did. Apple introduced the MagSafe charger in iphone 12, a successful attempt to lower the hassles with a wired charger.

According to a new Apple patent, MagSafe connectors are going to replace lightning connectors.

What is a Lightning connector?

It is a type of connector that allows the iphone to be connected to computing devices for data transfer and to charging adaptors for charging the iphone. It was introduced in 2012 and is used in almost every Apple device such as the iPad, iPod. The lightning cable connector is unique as it nullifies the need to check the connector’s sides before inserting it into the port.

What is a MagSafe connector?

It is a magnetically attached, wireless power transfer device designed originally for Mac Books. The MagSafe connector was introduced in the iPhone series for iPhone 12. Apple introduced two products regarding the MagSafe connectors: The MagSafe (Single charging pad for an iPhone) and The MagSafe duo (a charging mat for iPhone and Apple Watch).

Working of MagSafe charger

A ring of small, rectangular shape magnets is present underneath the backside of the iPhone 12. This magnet ring allows the chagrin puck to snap against the iPhone 12 and perfectly aligns it. The MagSafe connector is also compatible with all the other devices that depend on magnets for charging.

The older versions of the iPhone have the charging coil but do not have the magnets that will allow positioning the iPhone on the charging puck. The MagSafe charger also contains a series of magnets inside with a circuit that regulates the charging process.

About the New Apple Patent

Soon, the lightning connectors might get replaced by the modified versions of MagSafe connectors. This will lead to some positive changes in the iPhone’s morphology and the mechanics of the connection between the connector and the port. It may also decrease the entry of dust and moisture into the harbor, enhancing its resistance capabilities.

The modified version of MagSafe connectors, which will replace the lightning connectors, consists of a spring-loaded connector. To maintain the position of the connector, magnets are taken into consideration. That is, the magnets will keep the connectors in place. The spring-loaded connector will provide easy connection and disconnection.

Also, it has benefits in cord trip over scenarios, where the connector will quickly disengage from the device and saves it from further damage. Magnets are another advantage in the trip-over cases, as the connector is held in position by magnets. When the connector is suddenly pulled out, it does not cause damage to the port.

Why Modified MagSafe connector?

iPhone 12 is by default provided with the MagSafe connector and is very useful in multiple ways. It requires precise alignment of the iPhone to the MagSafe connectors for fast charging, but the lightning connector is much quicker than the MagSafe in terms of charging.

Complications

The traditional MagSafe connector unit is very delicate and fragile. Apple recommends cleaning it without excessive rubbing, abrasive cloth, and bleaches. The disinfectant also cannot be used as in liquid form on the unit. Only isopropyl wipes can be used to clean the unit.

MagSafe connectors contain magnets and can interfere with people having medical devices implanted in their bodies. MagSafe connectors may interfere with pacemakers in the heart and defibrillators also.

The magnet in the Iphone 12 or the MagSafe connector can damage other magnetic single-use cards like hotel key cards, credit cards, debit cards.

Conclusion

According to the patent, it describes the future of connectors for the iPhone that will resemble MagSafe connectors used in the Macbooks, which also use magnets in it and are also wired at the same time. This hybrid connector could solve both the problems, the iPhone port damage and the slow charging rate in the traditional MagSafe connectors.
